2019 Bridal Trends from the Golden Globes Red Carpet

By Vennette Lailani Seprado

The 76th Golden Globe Awards, which took place in Beverly Hills on January 7, 2019, was a star-studded event with A-list celebrities and up-and-comers dressed to the nines. This year is lauded for the attendance of a more diverse group of actors and actresses representing minorities in the entertainment industry. With this came the fashion choices that are as diverse as the attendees who went for bolder colors and styles so we curated bridal trends worth exploring this 2019.

Which leads us to list down bridal trends we are hoping to see this year straight from the red carpet, especially when 2018 was a year where a number of celebrity brides broke traditions and created new ones as well–from Mandy Moore’s pink Rodarte bridal gown to Emily Ratajkowski simply showing up in a stylish Zara pantsuit to her civil wedding.

Tulle is a dreamy fabric popular with brides. There was no shortage of bridal looks featuring this fabric as a number of celebrities channeled their inner ballerina princess in custom made creations.

Constance Wu

The breakout star of last year’s much-anticipated book adaptation – Crazy Rich Asians wore an A-line spaghetti strap gown with a sheer classic corset bodice in nude by renowned bridal wear designer, Vera Wang. She added a pop of color with an accent ribbon around her waist in orange velvet and completed her ensemble with gorgeous diamond jewelry from Messika Paris.

Kiki Layne

The beautiful newcomer drew acclaim for her performance in the movie – If Beale Street Could Talk. She arrived wearing a custom Dior creation designed by the house’s creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri. The dress, which had an exposed boned bodice, was made from 65-meters of powder pink and pale gray tulle with three people working over a period of 350 hours to create the exquisite piece.

The Glow star wore custom made Vera Wang in pale blue tulle. The plunging V-neck ball gown had a hand embroidered crystal and pearl bustier underneath, accented with a black velvet floor length ribbon for added drama. This look is perfect for a glam beach wedding soiree.

Emmy Rossum

Red carpet veteran – Emmy Rossum is no stranger to couture creations. This year, she chose an ethereal ball gown from designer Monique Lhuillier’s Spring ’19 collection. The strapless gown features a ruched bodice with a tulle skirt. Last year, we saw a number of celebrity brides in pink wedding dresses. We’re not quite over the trend yet and we’d like to see more of this romantic hue this year as well.

Nude is a great alternative for brides who aren’t so keen on wearing traditional white. There were a number of celebrities at the Golden Globes who donned nude frocks from embellished floor-length gowns to Julia Roberts’ fashion-forward mullet dress.

Julia Roberts

The Pretty Woman herself wore one of the most interesting ensembles of the night. She opted for a ruched one-shoulder dress with a pleated skirt paired with skinny black tuxedo trousers by British designer Stella McCartney. It’s a non-traditional bridal look that could work for a civil ceremony or a pre-wedding party.

Metallics for bridal are uncommon, but there’s always room for a wedding party dress to shimmy and shake.

Saoirse Ronan

The in-demand young actress was luminous in her shimmery Gucci creation. She wore an antique-platinum beaded sheer tulle gown that had a deep V-neckline with crystal embroidery detailing. She completed her look with bright red-orange lips (which we hope to see on more brides this year) and a pair of spectacular diamond and emerald earrings from Chopard.

Emily Blunt

Staying true to her British roots, Emily Blunt chose to wear an Alexander McQueen creation that looked like it was made from a heavier type of lace. Upon closer inspection, the high-collar sleeveless dress is a caged corset dress with a crinoline skirt with hand embroidered relics in pale silver depicting medieval motifs such as flowers, horses, suns and swans. Talk about details!

Minimalism doesn’t necessarily mean lack of drama or luxury. Garments devoid of any embellishments can easily make up for their simplicity by their complicated construction and luxurious fabric choice.

Lady Gaga

The multi-faceted performer nominated for her performance in the latest version of the movie A Star Is Born made a grand entrance in her Maison Valentino haute couture creation. She had on a periwinkle strapless gown and cape made of silk faille that was both dramatic and voluminous. The dress is a modern interpretation of what Judy Garland wore in the 1954 version of the film. Lady Gaga completed her ensemble with a blinding set of jewelry with over 100 carats of brilliant diamonds from Tiffany & Co.

Dakota Fanning

The luminous actress wore perhaps the most bridal friendly gown this edition. She was a standout in her custom made Armani Prive gown impeccably constructed and sculpted so close to the body. The ice blue-gray satin sweetheart neckline gown fit the svelte actress like a glove. It was streamlined and modern with a little hint of playfulness at the back with multiple bow accents. Adding more femininity to the ensemble, she completed her look with a pair of simple diamond stud earrings and a vintage diamond festoon necklace from Beladora Jewelry.
